In short

Mahjong Ways is a PG Soft slot released on 4 December 2019, built on a 5x4 grid with 1,024 ways to win. Winning tiles are removed, new ones drop in, and each cascade lifts the multiplier — to 5x in the base game and to 10x in free spins. Gold-plated tiles land on the three middle reels and turn wild whenever they take part in a win. RTP is 96.92%, volatility is medium, the bet range runs from €0.60 to €180, and the ceiling is 25,000x your stake.

The number everyone searches

1,024 Ways on a 5x4 Grid: How a Win Is Counted

No paylines to memorise — the grid itself is the pay table.

4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4=1,024 ways

Tap the buttons: the “243 ways” figure from search suggestions is a three-row formula — this grid has four rows. Full breakdown.

Mahjong Ways pays by ways, not lines. Land the same symbol on consecutive reels starting from the leftmost one, and every route through those reels counts as its own way. With five reels and four visible positions on each, the maths multiplies out to 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 × 4 — 1,024 possible routes for a single symbol.

In practice that changes how wins feel. You are not watching one horizontal line; a winning symbol anywhere in a column keeps the chain alive, and stacked repeats multiply the count of ways inside one spin. Eight tiles of one kind spread across the first three reels can already pay several ways at once.

The number in search suggestions — “243 ways” — describes slots with three rows, not this one. Mahjong Ways has never used that layout: the original pays 1,024 ways, and Mahjong Ways 2 moves to a 4-5-5-5-4 frame with 2,000 fixed lines instead.

The engine of the game

Cascades and the Rising Multiplier: 5x Base, 10x Bonus

One stake, several payouts — if the chain keeps rolling.

Every win in Mahjong Ways starts a cascade: the tiles that just paid are cleared off the board, new ones drop from above, and the result is re-evaluated as if it were a fresh spin — at no extra cost. As long as each drop produces another win, the sequence continues.

What makes the cascades matter is the multiplier ladder above the reels. It steps up with every consecutive win: x1 on the first, then x2, x3 and finally x5, where it stays for the rest of the sequence. In free spins the ladder is doubled — x2, x4, x6 and a ceiling of x10 — and it does not reset between bonus spins, which is where the game hides most of its potential.

The rhythm is distinctive: quiet spins are genuinely quiet, but a board that starts tumbling can turn one bet into four or five payouts, each at a higher multiplier than the last. That shape — rare but layered wins — is why the game plays “medium volatility” on paper yet feels spikier in session.

First win of a sequence pays at x1 — the ladder starts stepping up from the second consecutive cascade.

The signature mechanic

Gold-Plated Tiles: the Wild That Is Not a Wild Symbol

Tap the tile to see the transformation.

Mahjong Ways has no wild on the reel strip. Instead, symbols on the three middle reels can land as gold-plated versions of themselves — same value, gilded frame. Most of the time they pay like their ivory twins and nothing else happens.

The trick fires when a gold tile is part of a winning combination: after paying, it converts into a wild for the cascade that follows. A board with two or three gold tiles in the win doesn't just pay — it seeds the next drop with wilds in the middle of the grid, exactly where chains connect.

That is why experienced players read the board by its gold, not by its wins: a losing spin with four gilded tiles sitting on reels two to four is closer to a big sequence than a small win with none. The mechanic carries over to both sequels unchanged.

Where the 28% lives

Free Spins: 12 Spins Plus 2 per Extra Scatter

Pick how many scatters land — the counter does the maths.

12free spins

3 scatters = the base 12 spins.

Three or more scatter tiles anywhere on the board trigger the bonus: 12 free spins, plus 2 extra for every scatter beyond the third — 14 for four, 16 for five. The feature can also be retriggered while it runs.

Inside the bonus the multiplier ladder is upgraded to x2–x4–x6–x10 and, crucially, it does not reset between spins: once the sequence has climbed, every following win in the bonus pays at the elevated step. This is why the RTP splits the way it does — 28.03% of the game's 96.92% return sits in free spins alone, a share you only touch if the bonus triggers. The maths of that split is on the RTP page.

A real demo of Mahjong Ways — and of Mahjong Ways 2 — runs in most operator lobbies: open the game card and choose the demo or “play for fun” mode, no account needed. The demo uses the same reels, RTP and bonus rules as the cash game; only the balance is fictional. Search traffic for “mahjong ways 2 demo” usually means exactly this lobby switch, not a separate product.

Treat the demo as a rhythm test, not a payout forecast: with medium volatility and a bonus that carries over a quarter of the return, a hundred demo spins say little about a cash session. What it does show honestly is the pace — how often the board tumbles, and how long the quiet stretches run.

Quick answers

Mahjong Ways FAQ

How many ways to win does Mahjong Ways have?

1,024. The 243-ways figure that circulates in search suggestions belongs to other slots, not to this one; Mahjong Ways 2 raises the count to 2,000 fixed lines.

What is the Mahjong Ways max win?

25,000x the stake. The sequel is four times higher at 100,000x, which is the main practical difference between the two.

Do gold tiles act as wilds?

Only when they are part of a winning combination. They appear on the three middle reels and then convert, which extends chains that would otherwise stop.

Is Mahjong Ways the same as the tile board game?

No. It borrows mahjong tile art, but the maths are a cascading video slot with 1,024 ways and a 96.92% RTP; no tile-matching rules apply.

Summing up

The Slot Behind the Search

Mahjong Ways earned its search volume the honest way: a clean cascade engine, a wild mechanic you can see coming, and a 25,000x ceiling that the sequel multiplies by four. The numbers worth remembering are few — 1,024 ways, 96.92% RTP with a heavy free-spins share, multipliers of 5x base and 10x bonus — and every one of them is printed in the game's own info panel, not just here.

High-frequency cascades stretch sessions: count spins, not minutes, and set a deposit limit before the first one. A slot is entertainment, not income. 18+ · Free help: BeGambleAware.org · Playing responsibly
